University of Richmond

Planning Your Program

The University of Richmond offers a major and minor in geography. Any students considering the major or minor should contact the department chair to develop an appropriate program of study.

Regardless of the program of study that students choose, they will all take an introductory course in physical geography (GEOG 250) and an introductory course in human geography (GEOG 210). Both courses satisfy field-of-study requirements for the general education curriculum; GEOG 250 applies as an FSSN course, or field of study in the natural sciences, and GEOG 210 applies as an FSSA course, or field of study in social analysis. Geography majors are also required to take Geographical Information Systems (GEOG 260) and a capstone course.

Approximately ten geography courses are offered annually ranging across the social and natural sciences and geo-spatial techniques.  Social science courses tend to focus on sustainable development, political geography, economic geography, and human-environmental relationships while science and technology-based offerings focus on physical geography, geo-spatial technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the Global Positioning System (GPS) and Remote Sensing.
